What Downtown Sarasota is built from
The bayfront core and the streets behind it: condominium towers along Palm Avenue, Golden Gate Point and the Ringling Boulevard corridor, and a few blocks inland the small 1920s houses of Laurel Park and Burns Court. The newer towers are large-format and tightly sealed; the historic pockets are the opposite of that.

The Downtown Sarasota problem
Downtown is where the collected textiles are, and collected textiles fail in ways that walked-on rugs never do. The commonest by a distance is hanging. A rug put on a wall without a proper sleeve — nailed, clipped, or hung from a rod pushed through the fringe — is carrying its whole weight on one row of the foundation, and over a few years that row stretches, the warps at the top edge part one at a time, and the rug pulls itself out of square. Hung properly, the load spreads across a full-width sleeve sewn to the back and the rug simply hangs. The second is storage between addresses: downsizing out of a house into a tower puts half a collection into a unit off Fruitville or Cattlemen for a year, and a rug rolled up in an unconditioned unit through a Florida summer is being handed to insects and to mildew at the same time. The third is the simplest — a rug nobody walks on is a rug nobody examines, so damage to a display piece can run for years before anyone turns it over.
