What West of Trail is built from
The older streets running from the Tamiami Trail down to the bay south of downtown — Cherokee Park, Harbor Acres, Oyster Bay, McClellan Park. Large lots under a deep oak canopy, 1920s Mediterranean Revival houses, and a scattering of the flat-roofed, glass-walled mid-century houses the Sarasota School of Architecture is known for.
The most established addresses in the city, several generations deep in places. The largest and the oldest rugs on the route are here: room-size antiques, some bought for the house when it was built and never off the floor since.
The West of Trail problem
Size is the practical obstacle, and it is the reason these rugs are usually in the state they are in. A fourteen-by-twenty-two under a dining table in a Cherokee Park house is more than two people can comfortably lift, so it does not get lifted — not to vacuum under, not to look at the back, not even to move for a party. Decades of fine soil work down through the pile and bond into the foundation, and because the change happens over thirty years nobody registers it: the rug looks exactly the way it has always looked. The second thing these rugs carry is their own repair history. A piece that has been in one family since the 1930s has usually been mended two or three times by whoever was available at the time, and that old work has to be assessed before any new work goes in — a patch cut out of a different rug, a machine-sewn binding laid over an original selvedge, an area of pile sheared down to disguise a repair underneath. Collection here means rolling on site rather than folding, because a dry antique foundation cracks along a fold and does not recover.
