What Southside Village is built from
The blocks around Osprey Avenue and Hillview Street beside Sarasota Memorial. Small 1920s to 1940s bungalows and cottages on tight lots under mature oaks, most renovated at least once, and — unusually for this coast — a good many of them still on their original wood floors rather than tile.
Year-round, dense and genuinely walkable, with hospital staff mixed in among families who have been on the same street for a long time. Rugs here are often pieces that have been in the family for years, laid where they have always been laid.
The Southside Village problem
Wood underneath changes the whole problem, and this is one of the few parts of the route where the floor is wood rather than tile or stone. A finished board floor and a wool rug are both hygroscopic, and they sit in contact for years, so moisture moves back and forth between them instead of meeting something inert. Three things follow. Lift a rug that has been in one spot for a decade and the floor beneath it is a distinctly paler rectangle, because finish ambers with light and that patch has had none — irreversible, and a good argument for moving a rug occasionally rather than only rotating it in place. Where a solid rubber-backed pad has been used, the finish under it is often cloudy or slightly tacky, and some of it has come up onto the rug's foundation. And a rug that gets damp and stays damp against boards will cup the boards underneath while quietly rotting its own foundation from the one face nobody ever looks at. A breathable pad, and lifting both a couple of times a year, prevents all three.
