What Lakewood Ranch is built from
A master-planned community straddling the Manatee and Sarasota county line east of I-75, among the largest in the country and still being built out — villages of single-family houses, villas, townhomes and apartments laid out around Main Street and Waterside, with active construction along the eastern edge.
The youngest households on the route by a wide margin: families, relocations and working couples rather than seasonal residents. Almost every rug here was bought for the house within the last few years, from a showroom or online, rather than inherited into it.
The Lakewood Ranch problem
New houses mean new rugs, and new rugs fail in completely different ways from old ones. Three constructions dominate what comes off this part of the route. Hand-tufted rugs, where the pile is punched through a scrim and held in place by a layer of latex adhesive: the adhesive is the part that gives out, and once it begins to break down the rug smells powerfully of old glue when it is wet and starts shedding its backing. Viscose sold as bamboo silk, art silk or banana silk, which is regenerated cellulose — it loses most of its strength when saturated, yellows from clean water alone, and mats flat and permanently under a dining chair, so ordinary spot cleaning ruins it and nothing undoes that. And inexpensive machine-made or lightly made hand-knotted rugs with unstable dye, where a red border runs into an ivory field the first time a dog is sick on it. None of that is a criticism of anybody's rug. It is a question of establishing which of the three you own before water is introduced, which is exactly what the fibre check and the dye test at intake are for.
