What Lido Key is built from
A narrow key between the Gulf and Big Pass, developed through the 1920s and then again heavily in the 1950s and 1960s. Low-rise condominium buildings and converted mid-century apartment courts stand close together behind Lido Beach, with larger buildings at the north end toward St. Armands.
Small units, short leases and constant turnover — weekly and monthly lets in the same building as year-round owners. The rugs are usually modest and modern, and they get spot-cleaned by whoever happens to be holding the key that week.
The Lido Key problem
The damage here is done with good intentions. A rug in a let unit gets spot-treated over a season by three or four different people — a guest, a changeover crew, an owner down for a fortnight — none of whom know what the rug is made of, and all of whom reach for whatever is under the sink. Most of that is strongly alkaline: general-purpose spray cleaner, oxygen bleach powder, aerosol carpet foam. Wool is a protein fibre that wants to sit on the acid side of neutral; alkaline chemistry pulls dye straight out of it, and the bleach products lift the colour rather than the stain. What is left is worse than the original spill in two separate ways — a pale halo where the dye went, and a ring of detergent residue that was never rinsed and now draws every bit of grit in the room to that exact spot. By the time a rug from here reaches us there are usually four or five of these rings and nobody can say what went on any of them, which is why the wash starts with a residue flush and a dye test rather than with a stain.
