The Siesta Key problem
Siesta sand is not ordinary beach sand and it does not behave like it. It is close to pure quartz with almost none of the broken shell that makes most Gulf sand coarse and gritty, which is why it is that startling white and why it stays cool underfoot. It is also far finer than sand has any business being. In a rug it behaves less like grit and more like flour: it flows down through the pile rather than resting on top of it, packs in against the foundation, and sits there by the pound while the rug still looks perfectly clean from standing height. Two things follow from that. It arrives on everything, not just shoes — towels, beach bags, hair, dogs, the hem of a swimsuit — so a shoes-off rule at the door achieves very little. And a domestic vacuum is the wrong instrument: suction lifts the top layer, and the beater bar drives the rest of it further down. It has to come out dry, with air and controlled beating, before any water goes near the rug, because water turns a fine dry powder into something much closer to a paste.
